We may have gotten off on a somewhat rocky start, but….

The swim race was a swimming success!

volunteers power boats,

the Sea Wolfe, and

our GREAT KAYAK VOLUNTEERS too!!!

We had 3 heats of 1/2 mile, 2 mile and 1 mile swims.

Just a note if you have never swam a mile, it’s a long way.

Also of note if you have swam it at a pool it’s also a lot different at the lake in open water with wind & with waves too. The water is not clear, the water is cooler than a pool & the boats make noise too!

Two of several interesting stories with this race, the 1st…

I was required to be out of my kayak and on a jet ski for safety reasons of the race organizers, yes I said a jet ski…

Needless to say this was interesting, and did not allow me the close one on one access I like when doing a race.

however I pride myself on working and playing well with others and again, it was a requirement that I be on the jet ski, so as you can see I took one for the team!

O, and I almost forgot..

I had to have a lifeguard with me!

The other story and the one of greater and I do mean greater importance is the final racer on the 2 mile course,

she was a cancer survivor, and swimming was not really her thing, but being a cancer survivor did teach her that if her mind could think it… her body could do it and she made the time cut off of the 2 miles swim, with minutes to spare, and finished the race.

This kind of example of how to live your life inspires me each and every time is see it, and it is truly amazing.

So congratulations to all the swimmers who entered for a great cause to fight cancer and for the volunteers who help make this swim a safe and fun event too!
